As a practicing Christian, you’re most likely aware that God has Good News for us and God wants us to know about it. Yet when reading Scripture we may find “news” that at first doesn’t appear to be “good.” That’s one of the approaches we could take in speaking about the Gospel of John chapter 15, verses 9-17. Sure, Jesus is reminding His apostles about God’s love and how Jesus commands us to love one another – that’s Good News. But we should also know the time and place when Jesus speaks the words from this portion of John’s Gospel.

Jesus is speaking to His disciples right before he is arrested, tortured and crucified on the Cross. That’s absolutely sorrow and pain, yet Jesus goes through this unimaginable sorrow so that we can be redeemed from our sins. That leads to the amazing Good News of salvation for those who believe.

Trust in the Lord, accept God’s unlimited love through Jesus, and share that love with others. That’s when we will all experience joy as God’s kingdom comes even closer.
